Search this forum for a post called "Infant Survival Suits" for more information. When I last checked, one needed an exemption letter from the Coast Guard. My letter was easy to obtain and arrived quickly. Good luck.

My daughter had her second birthday on the boat last year. She went on a ten day freezer trip this year. There are survival suits around that fit little kids. They look more like a neoprene sleeping bag than a survival suit. If you ask around, they are loaned out pretty often. There is a little handout at Murray's in Sitka. Some of the locals have put together their best tips for kids on the drag.

Hi All:

Their are currently no USCG approved survival suits for infants and small children less than 35" tall. If you have kids on board who fit that description, you need to contact the USCG and request a letter of conditional exemption so that they will not enforce the survival suit requirement. The letter should be good until such time as USCG approved immersion suits are available for the young ones.

Note that you while you can get an exemption from the survival suit requirement, you MUST still provide a personal flotation device(PFDs) for children/infants under 35".

Survival suits are mandatory - and available for purchase - for all those who stand taller than 35".

If you are boarded and do not have the letter AND a PFD for each small child and infant, you will probably be sent back to port.

See the attached letter, which also provides contact information.

Safety First!
