How deep is too deep I quess when you are a rookie u need a place like this to ask questions, because it so easy to fail. SO here is the big question for to day starting out this spring quesion one what size of leads, wire 2 or 2 1/2 , 3 fathom and do i go from top to bottom with gear??????????. i know this alot to ask but i really do not want to crank all days pumping bait and go into the hole because of the wrong spacing. I know i will have bad days due to wrong color spoon or flasher, i should have fished the inside of val bay or ran to neets thats just life. :D thank you for this web site  i know i have alot to learn and so hard times but that first king on deck ok that first check will make it all worth it Rookie kudson cove

It all depends on what you are fishing, how deep, what season etc.
I use 1.5 fathom hand marked wire with fifty or 60 pound leads. When fishing kings I go 4.5-9 fathoms between spreads depending. Usually less gear is better unless they are really clattering up. Coho usually 1.5 - 3 fathoms between spreads. Chums, no closer than 4.5 fathoms between spreads as they are easily spooked.
I have run gear from top to bottom and I have also fished coho with 4 spreads on the bottom in 24 fathoms.
Before I got old I used to run 1 fathom marked wire for coho and chums and ran a spread on every mark. We got real good at untangling messes. But it was fun to be running 100 spreads and go through the gear for a lot of fish.
One year, the first year Sarah was with me full time after retiring from teaching, we went the whole summer without running more than 11 spreads a line and often only fished four or five a line. It made chum trolling a whole different game than fishing 100-120 spreads.
Almost all of the above is factual.
